On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in the evening, a video went viral showing a man with burnt torso running from a burning house while frantically pointing at his house and attempting to run back.

He was heard muttering that his wife was in the house and looking confused as onlookers milled around him, trying to make sense of what had happened.
Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, her niece identified as Faith Kemunto, said that at an autopsy was carried out at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, and it emerged that the famous businesswoman had died of smoke inhalation.
This is contrary to reports circulating online saying that he had killed her by strangling her and then burnt her body to hide evidence.

The last time Mokaya was seen by members of the public was when he was running around, shirtless, with the upper part of his body, which is supposed to be chocolate, looking pink. The latter was an indication that he had been badly burnt.

Kemunto, the niece of Mokaya, alluded to the fact that every marriage has its challenges but things were not very bad between her uncle and his wife.
On the other hand, Lillian Nyaboke, a niece of the depoarted Esther, pianted a not so rosy picture and said that the businesswoman had told her that she was justing hanging on for the sake of the kids having a father.
The late Esther also told her that she was hanging onto the marriage for security, as people tend to be mean to unmarried women and to also have a name.
