As Kenyans continue ranting over a video where some youths were recorded stepping on Kenyan flag, several authorities have now come out to explain why it is against the law to desecrate a national flag.
The incident happened during during aย match between Kenya Police and Somaliaโs Mogadishu City in the first leg of their preliminary tie at Nyayo Stadium where theย host beat the visitors by three goals to one Kenyan law prohibits the improper use of the National Flag and certain emblems, names, words, and likenesses for professional and commercial purposes.
According to the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, displaying certain flags is also punishable.
The Act prevents the use of the National Flag and other emblems in ways that could be considered improper or disrespectful.
While the exact penalties arenโt specified in the provided information, the Act gives provisions for prosecution and punishment for those who misuse the National Flag and other national symbols.
However, there are strict penalties including imprisonment and fines, for acts like burning or defacing the flag.
While explaining why the Kenyan flag ought to be respected, Nairobi Regional Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo said the matter is being investigated for proper action to be taken.
โFlag is a symbol of national unity and something that is highly respected not only in Kenya but in other nations,โ said the Regional Commissioner
He added, โIt is an item that is used for special purposes like national days, hoisted in government offices and should be handled with a lot of respect. Action can be taken on anyone who disrespect the flag of if found that something malicious was done,โ
In regard to the viral clip of youths stepping on the Kenyan flag, the Regional Commissioner said investigations have been launched for a possible action.
โThe clip is being investigated to ascertain its authenticity and identification of the culprits,โ the regional commissioner said adding that if they Kenyans, the suspects will be arraigned in court and if they are of foreign country and have left, a protest note can be written to their embassy,โ he stated
