Kenyan duo Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet have a chance to win a second gold medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships after qualifying for the 5,000m final.
World champion Faith Kipyegon and Olympics gold medalist Beatrice Chebet have set up a tantalizing 5,000m final at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
The two qualified for the final from their heats on Thursday with Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich joining them while they will also have to deal with the challenge of Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay.
Chebet was the first to book her place after winning in Heat 1 effortlessly as she coasted home in 14:45.59 ahead of Italian Nadia Battocletti, who clocked 14:46.36, for second place, while American Shelby Houlihan completed the podium in 14:56.42.

However, with the first eight qualifying for the final, Kenyan Margaret Akidor missed out after finishing 14th in a time of 15:10.91.
Meanwhile, Kipyegon qualified from Heat 2 after second place in a seasonโs best 14:56.71 behind Tsegay, who won it in 14:56.46. Australian Rose Davies clocked 14:56.83 for third place with Jebet Ngetich sealing the final qualification ticket after eighth place in the heat in a time of 14:57.90.
Chebet has been in great form over the 5,000m since winning Olympics gold in Paris last year and also broke the world record in Eugene in July and is seen as favourite to claim a second world title in Tokyo after winning the 10,000m title last Sunday.
Meanwhile, Kipyegon is looking to defend her title and after losing out to Chebet at the Olympics, she is keen for revenge against her best friend as she also looks to add another gold to her collection after winning the 1,500m gold on Tuesday.
