Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko has filed an appeal challenging the refereeing decisions that marred Kenya’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Madagascar.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Sonko said he had moved to contest the actions of match officials who disallowed two Kenyan goals, decisions that ultimately contributed to Harambee Stars’ exit from the competition.“I have filed an appeal against the biased referees who denied Kenya two clear goals. Let us pray and wait for CAF’s decision,” Sonko wrote.

The Kenya–Madagascar clash drew widespread criticism from fans after two controversial rulings went against Kenya, fueling claims of unfair officiating. Sonko’s filing has reignited debate over refereeing standards in African football, with many Kenyans calling for stronger oversight.

However, analysts note that under Confederation of African Football (CAF) rules, referees’ decisions on the field are generally considered final and cannot be overturned on appeal, except in cases of mistaken identity or player eligibility. This has cast doubt on whether Sonko’s challenge will succeed.

As of Monday, CAF had not issued any public statement confirming receipt of the appeal or indicating whether it would review the matter.
