Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, popularly known by his stage name Newton Karish, officially declared his candidacy for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat.

Karish, a three-term Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Muminji Ward, first captured the public’s attention not through politics, but through the provocative and soulful sounds of Benga music.

His breakout hit, “Muthoni Kifagio” (1993), remains a Kenyan classic, alongside other fan favorites such as “Ngoma Bila Nguo,” “Avai Mwari,” and “Safari ya Meru.”

Karish gained his popularity in politics, winning the Muminji Ward seat in 2013 and successfully defending it in 2017.

True to his artistic roots, Karish’s political style has been marked by outspoken advocacy, often mirroring the candid themes of his music.

He was born and raised in Gangara, where he attended Gangara Primary School and later Kegonge Secondary School, where he excelled and earned a division 1.

He was admitted to Kangaru High School for A-levels but dropped out in Form 5 due to financial constraints.

Though later admitted to Kaimosi Teachers College, he declined the offer, eventually taking work as a foreman at a construction company.

Karish began composing music in Class 7, with his first song titled “Kavoka.” His sound, a unique blend of Embu and Kamba musical influences, features signature elements like rhythmic cowbells and storytelling guitar solos.

He has performed widely across Meru, Kitui, and Machakos counties, especially after incorporating Kiswahili lyrics—a suggestion from renowned producer Peter Kigia.

Outside politics, Karish remains deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of musicians.

Through his “Guitar ya Karish” initiative, he continues to nurture young talent across Embu County.

The project recently held a major event at Club Billionaire in Embu, where Karish celebrated 40 years in music before thousands of fans and fellow artists. The celebration featured live performances, awards, and mentorship sessions, with winners receiving an imported guitar and a motorbike.

Karish’s trademark look includes shiny outfits, cowboy hats, and sharpshooter shoes—a nod to his inspiration, Kanda Bongo Man.

He performs with the Gangara Boys Band, which includes his brother Onesmus Ndwiga, popularly known as Ones wa Ngari.

Karish, who also goes by KK and SBT (Short But Tough), is married and a father.

The opposition has settled on Karish to fly the DP ticket.

Karish is seen as the most charismatic and recognizable face within the opposition, drawing on his popularity both in the Assembly and from his influence in the benga music industry.
