Muthoni Ndonga, popularly known as Muthoni Drummer Queen (MDQ), is a celebrated Kenyan rapper, drummer, songwriter, and cultural entrepreneur.

Born in Dagoretti Corner, Nairobi, she is renowned not only for her genre-bending music but also for her bold fashion statements and vibrant hairstyles.

Over the years, she has carved out a unique space in Africaโ€™s music and cultural scene, championing alternative sounds and creating platforms for artistic expression.

Muthoniโ€™s passion for music began at a young age, though her artistic pursuits were met with skepticism by her parents, who held traditional views about career choices.

Despite this, she sharpened her craft through school choirs, theatre, and debate clubs, which gave her confidence and stage presence.

She attended Lavington Primary School before proceeding to Moi Girlsโ€™ High School, Nairobi, Kenya.

Later, she pursued a diploma in International Relations and Philosophy at the United States International University (USIU) Africa.

It was during her time at university that her vision for spotlighting alternative music in Kenya crystallized, leading her to establish the now iconic โ€˜Blankets & Wine Festivalโ€™, a hub for East Africaโ€™s growing alternative music scene.

Her musical breakthrough came from experimenting with sounds that fused hip-hop, reggae, dancehall, soul, and electro-pop, creating a distinct alternative electro-hip-hop style.

Although Muthoni initially aspired to become a lawyer, her path shifted when a friendโ€™s sister, with whom she often sang, challenged her and her friend to put on a show.

The duo performed together for three days, earning money and receiving overwhelming support from their friends, who financially supported them.

It was through this experience that Muthoni discovered her deep passion for music and everything that comes with it.

As an artist, Muthoni has released standout singles, including โ€œSuzie Noma,โ€ โ€œFeelinโ€™ It,โ€ โ€œLife,โ€ โ€œPower,โ€ โ€œNai Ni Ya Who,โ€ โ€œAfrican Fever,โ€ โ€œGet Up,โ€ โ€œGive Thanks,โ€ โ€œShe,โ€ โ€œMind Your Lane,โ€ โ€œMillion Voice,โ€ โ€œLink Up,โ€ and โ€œWelcome to the Disco.โ€

She is also the founder of two cultural festivals, Blankets & Wine and Africa Nouveau, that have become critical platforms for showcasing local and international talent in East Africa.

Her influence extends beyond music into cultural entrepreneurship, where she continues to shape conversations around African identity and creativity.

She was also recognized as a TED Fellow, selected among global changemakers for her cultural and artistic impact.

Away from the stage, Muthoni is a proud mother to her child, Manjano Ndonga Musosi, whom she shares with her partner, Musa Omusi.

Featured in Vogue Magazine, Muthoni Drummer Queen is more than a musician, she is a cultural force.
