Nairobi: Former Nairobi senatorial aspirant Gabriel Bukachi Chapia has been sentenced after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges of forgery and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

According to court documents obtained by TUKO.co.ke, the conviction was delivered on Friday, September 19, at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Law Courts following a plea bargain agreement with the prosecution.

On November 6, 2020, the accused, a former ODM politician, was arraigned in court, initially facing fourteen charges. These were later substituted with sixteen charges on April 15, 2022.

He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison or a fine of Ksh 30,000 on each count.

Bukachi admitted to forging academic certificates, including a masterโ€™s degree in information technology from Daystar University, a computer science degree from Maseno University, and a diploma in project planning and management from the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru.

He used the falsified documents to secure employment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest), and Nairobi City County Government.

In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered Bukachi to compensate the public through the respective institutions, totalling KSh 3,917,102.56, inclusive of 12% interest.

He is required to pay KSh 2 million within seven days, with the remaining balance to be settled in quarterly instalments of KSh 239,637.82.

Failure to comply will result in an additional 12-month imprisonment.

The conviction follows a 2017 report to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and a contentious attempt by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to withdraw the case in October 2024, despite testimony from 14 witnesses.

Senior Principal Magistrate C.N. Ondieki emphasised that the judgment and sentence are final, with limited grounds for appeal permitted within 14 days.
