Former Baringo Senator and Kenya African National Union (KANU) National Chairman Gideon Moi is set to make a dramatic political comeback after being nominated to contest the Baringo Senatorial seat in the upcoming by-election.

In a statement on Thursday, KANU announced that Moi had been unanimously endorsed as its flagbearer after โ€œextensive consultations, deliberations, and consensusโ€ within party structures and among Baringo residents.

โ€œThis decision underscores the partyโ€™s unwavering commitment to offering experienced, visionary, and people-centered leadership at a critical juncture for Baringo County and the nation at large,โ€ KANU spokesman Manasse Nyainda said.

The by-election follows the death of Senator William Cheptumo in February 2025.

Cheptumo, a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) member, had defeated Moi in the 2022 General Election โ€” ending a decades-long Moi family dominance of the Baringo Senate seat. His passing has now set the stage for a fresh political showdown in Rift Valley.

In accepting the nomination, Moi expressed gratitude to KANU supporters and the people of Baringo:

โ€œI am humbled by your confidence and patience. Together, we shall build a stronger, united Baringo, anchored on development and inclusivity.โ€

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is expected to announce the official by-election date in the coming weeks.
