Gor Mahia face potential fines after Sports Kenya started investigations into chaotic scenes witnessed before their match against Bidco United at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

Gor Mahia face the risk of being punished so early in the season after their fans were involved in running battles with the police on the opening day of the season.

K’Ogalo welcomed the season in chaotic fashion as police had to lob tear gas canisters and fire in the air to disperse rowdy fans who had tried to gain forceful entry into Kasarani Stadium without tickets.

Running battles ensued as police dispersed the trouble-causing supporters and by the time calm was restored, a number of fans had been injured, taking the spotlight away from the game which K’Ogalo would lose 1-0 to sum up a bad day for the 21-time Kenyan champions.

The ugly scenes painted Gor Mahia in a negative light at a time when Kenyan football is trying to change the narrative following the success of the recently-concluded CHAN 2024 where fan behavior was at the core of the tournament.

Following the incident, Sports Kenya, the body that manages state stadiums in the country, has opened investigations into the chaotic situation and K’Ogalo could find themselves punished.

“We are still conducting assessment and a decision has not been made but we will have to look at everything before deciding the next cause of action,” a Sports Kenya official told Pulse Sports.

Among the sanctions that could befall K’Ogalo are fines in case of any property damaged and in the worst-case scenario, a ban from using Sports Kenya facilities in the country, which include Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums.

Gor Mahia will be keeping fingers crossed that the chaotic scenes do not lead to severe punishments as that would scatter their plans given the club is seeking to cash in on from fan attendance this season from the much larger Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums after being limited last season when the two facilities were under renovation in readiness for CHAN 2024.
