Harambee Stars out to redeem image in Seychelles tie after Gambia loss
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy shouts instructions to his players during the 1-0 win over Morocco.

Harambee Stars will be without defenders Alphonse Omija and Aboud Omar in Thursday’s dead rubber World Cup qualifier against Seychelles, coach Benni McCarthy has revealed.

In a media briefing on Monday ย at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, McCarthy expressed his optimism that the team will redeem itself from Thursdayโ€™s 3-1 loss to Gambia, despite the absence of the two defenders. ย

“We respect every opponent โ€” whether itโ€™sย  Seychelles or any other team we are playing againest with . But weโ€™re not here to just participate โ€” weโ€™re here to win and build for 2027,โ€ said McCarthy.

With only Aboud who is suspended and Omija on club duty missing, McCarthy stressed the importance of effort over talent.

โ€œIf youโ€™re not willing to work hard, youโ€™ll go home. Talent gets you through the door, but hard work keeps you in,” McCarthy added, warning the players who could be entertaining complacency.

Kenyan forward William Lenkupaye, who is making his debut in the squad, said the team has welcomed him warmly.

โ€œThe boys are great. Iโ€™ve already learned โ€˜ Now itโ€™s time to focus on the pitch,โ€ he said.

McCarthy hinted at using more local-based players and emphasised set-pieces and high pressing as key strategies.

Seychelles Head Coach Ralph Jean-Louis also warned that they are not in Kenya just to complete their fixtures, but to make a statement despite their poor run so far.

โ€œWe know Kenya is strong, especially at home, but weโ€™ve come here to win. Weโ€™re focused, and anything can happen in football,โ€ Jean-Louis said.

His captain, Dean Mothe, echoed the confidence, adding that team morale is high.

“The camp has been positive. Weโ€™ve prepared mentally and tactically. Weโ€™re ready for the challenge.โ€

In the last match between Kenya and Seychelles, Harambee Stars won 5-0.
