President William Ruto told Harambee Stars players that the government would only cover half the cost of the affordable housing units he had pledged during the CHAN 2024 tournament.

Speaking at a luncheon with the players at State House, Ruto explained that the subsidy would apply to two-bedroom houses under the programme, each valued at KSh 2 million.

The government would meet KSh 1 million of that amount, with players given the option of clearing the balance through mortgages spread over 20 years.

He stressed that the benefit would not be converted into cash, noting that players must select a house in a town of their choice, whether Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu or elsewhere.

The president pushed back against claims that the state was issuing handouts.

He insisted that players would still be responsible for part of the cost, with the governmentโ€™s support aimed only at making repayment easier.

Minutes later, Ryan Ogam thought he had doubled the advantage, only for the referee to rule out his effort.

The visitors equalised after Lewis Bandi handled in the box, with Fenohasina Razafimaro converting from the spot.
