Harambee Starsโ preparations for Tuesdayโs crucial World Cup qualifier against Seychelles have suffered a major blow, with head coach Benni McCarthy confirming the absence of two key players.
Deputy captain Aboud Omar has been suspended just a day before the fixture, a decision McCarthy said was necessary to preserve discipline within the squad.
The experienced left-back, known for his consistency and leadership, will miss a match where his presence would have been vital both defensively and in guiding younger teammates.
โCertain players have certain skill sets, but they donโt feel they need to work towards that skill set,โ McCarthy told reporters during his pre-match press conference at Kasarani.
While avoiding details of the suspension, the coach stressed the importance of discipline and hard work in the national team setup.
Adding to the setback, defender Alphonse Omija has been excused from camp to finalise a high-profile move to Tunisian giants รtoile Sportive du Sahel. The Gor Mahia star, who shone during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), will miss the Seychelles clash as he completes paperwork for the transfer.
Omijaโs move has been widely hailed as a milestone in his career. His commanding displays at CHANโwhere he formed a rock-solid partnership with Sylvester Owino and Michael Kibwageโhelped Kenya concede just two goals in regular time. Tunisian media have already described him as a marquee signing for รtoile du Sahel.
Despite the double setback, McCarthy reassured fans that there are no injury concerns in camp and expressed confidence that the squad has the depth to handle the challenge.
Even so, Omarโs suspension and Omijaโs absence have thrown the spotlight onto Kenyaโs defensive depth and leadership on the pitch. McCarthy will now be forced to reshuffle his backline and rely on emerging leaders to step up at this critical stage of the qualifiers.
Tomorrowโs clash will therefore test not only Kenyaโs tactical discipline but also their mental resilienceโqualities McCarthy has been keen to instil since taking charge.
