Members of the County Assembly  from Nairobi on Sunday began collecting signatures in a bid to impeach Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja.

This follows a special meeting on Tuesday where over 80 MCAs resolved to start the process stating the governor was just a content creator.

“We have collected 63 signatures. The threshold is 40 for impeachment. So we will table the motion on Tuesday,” Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai stated. Adding that, “The meeting was held at Westlands. Over 30 MCAs have called, and they are with us,”

Another MCA  said the meeting was held at a private location in Nairobi, and the impeachment motion is being drafted.

“We have resolved to send governor Sakaja home over broken promises, we are in a recess, but the next thing is to request the speaker to call for special sitting from next week,” the MCA stated

This is the first time that the MCAs from both ODM and the UDA are coming together to push for an impeachment process against governor Sakaja.

The county assembly has 123 members after the death of Hon Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North Ward.

During last week’s special meeting, the MCAs accused Sakaja of being out of touch with challenges facing city residents and that all projects had stalled.

The MCAs said, ” The members also feel the governor is completely out of touch with the ground and MCAs,” said the Nairobi South representative.

“Three quarters of members who call the governor cannot get him, so there is an issues of communication between the Executive and the Assembly and his failure to come out on the issue of broad-based government,” the MCAs added.
