Hundreds of residents of at least four villages in Kwanza constituency, Trans Nzoia county have been displaced from their homes following a recent heavy downpour.

The rain has led to the Sabwani River breaking its banks, subsequently flooding homes housing at least 200 people.

Areas affected are Namanjalala and Kapsitwet in Kapomboi ward. Well-wishers and volunteers have been evacuating those affected with the situation being worsened by a heavy downpour witnessed on Thursday, September 11.

Jotham Wafula, a resident of Kapsitwet, told TUKO.co.ke that many of the residents are counting huge losses after the heavy rainfall washed away livestock and crops.

In Liyavo village, the situation is almost similar. Joyce Nasimiyu, a local, said the majority of them risk contracting water borne and cold related diseases and called on the County Government of Trans Nzoia and the national government through the Kenya Red Cross Society to visit and rescue them.

She noted that some of their houses have already caved in, making them helpless and exposed.

Joseph Mudenyo, a resident of Kitale Ndogo area said all the feeder roads are now inaccessible due to flooding of the area.

Former Kapomboi ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Bernard Mlipuko who visited Maliki area flood victims voiced his concern that even after the residents of the affected villages came out to express their plight, no action has been taken by the authorities.

He noted that the affected locals have a right to receive help from the government as they also pay taxes.

Other affected areas include St. Emmanuel, Misemwa, Lurare, and Falkland.

The affected residents are in need of blankets, mosquito nets, some household items and medicines.

Previously, TUKO.co.ke reported that the Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that several parts of the country will continue to experience rainfall.

At least four regions were listed among those to experience heavy rainfall and cold weather.

They included Rift Valley, North Eastern and the coast region.
