Nairobi, Kenya — Kenyan rapper Toxic Lyrical has ignited a fierce debate online after chanting “tutam” — street slang for “two term” — in reference to President William Ruto’s presidency during a performance at State House, Nairobi.

The fast-rising artist, known for his viral street anthems, was among entertainers performing at a presidential youth empowerment program attended by thousands. The event, led by President Ruto, saw over 1,100 empowerment packages — from motorbikes to car wash kits — distributed to youth groups across Nairobi.

In a widely circulated video, Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie is seen ushering Toxic to the microphone. After some hesitation, the rapper declared “tutam”, prompting cheers from the crowd and a handshake with the President.

Speaking later in a cryptic social media post, Toxic defended himself, saying:

“Ground ni ile ile. Niseme one tam akiwa apo nipotezwe?” (Should I say one term while he’s right there and risk disappearing?)

The rapper’s move has split his fan base. Some sympathised, saying he was under visible pressure from the host. Others, however, unfollowed him, accusing him of selling out to politics and betraying the frustrations of Kenyan youth facing joblessness, police brutality, and economic hardship.

This controversy follows a growing trend where Kenyan entertainers face public scrutiny over political alignment. Read more about how politics is reshaping Kenya’s music industry on sauce.co.ke.
