Held at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds, this two-day event brings together 44 teams and a massive crowd of fans. 

The main storyline is the fierce competition between leading teams KCB RFC and Strathmore Leos, who are fighting for every point in a neck-and-neck race for the championship. 

The tournament also pays tribute to its founder, George Mwangi Kabeberi, and highlights the growth of rugby in Kenya, from the impressive women’s teams to the festival atmosphere and the ongoing discussions about player welfare.

The battle for the overall circuit championship has narrowed down to a thrilling showdown between two powerhouse teams. 

KCB RFC, the current leaders, hold a slender two-point advantage with 82 points. 

Hot on their heels is Strathmore Leos, who have 80 points and are looking to build on their recent win at the Embu 7s. 

KCB is also chasing a record fourth consecutive Kabeberi title, adding more pressure to their campaign. 

Key matchups are set for today, with KCB taking on Nakuru RFC, Mean Machine, and Mombasa RFC in Pool A. 

The competition is fierce, as every point is crucial for the teams vying for the championship.

Hosted by Mwamba RFC, the Kabeberi Sevens is steeped in history and heritage. 

Named in honor of George Mwangi Kabeberi, a former Mwamba player who passed away in 1986, the event serves as a tribute to one of the club’s founding members and a significant figure in Kenyan rugby. 

The event’s move from the Goan Grounds to the RFUEA Grounds was made to ensure a better experience for the players and fans. 

This year’s tournament is supported by a Ksh. 3 million sponsorship from Tusker, highlighting the event’s importance and commercial appeal. 

The women’s category also promises to be a highlight, with the Mwamba Ladies team already crowned as the women’s circuit champions and aiming to finish their season with an undefeated run.

While the focus remains on the competitive action, the Kabeberi Sevens also provides a platform to highlight broader issues in Kenyan rugby. 

For example, recent reports of payment disputes at Kenya Harlequins have brought player welfare to the forefront of discussions.
