National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s campaign has been bolstered by opposition supporters in the diaspora who raised 1.8 million in hours for the endeavor and still contributing.
So far, 156 NASA supporters living in the United States have pooled together $18,060 (Sh1,858,374) by Sunday against the Sh5 million they have set as target on the online crowdfunding site GodFundMe.
On Friday, Opposition chief Raila Odinga appealed for well wishers in and outside the country to help fund his campaigns by making contributions through Mpesa paybill and a bank account.
Raila said that one can contribute as low as Sh10 through Pay Bill number 991444. He said that contributing towards the cause amounted to “one buying themselves a ticket to Canaan”.
President Uhuru Jubilee party, however, dismissed the fundraising as a well orchestrated gimmick to con Kenyans.
“Heโs just fleecing his supporters. There are people who use the elections to make money. They donโt go to elections to win,” National Assembly Majority leader Aden Duale told journalists.
“Kenyans must ignore these fraudsters. They are masquerading themselves as liberators, so we are telling Kenyans to be very very careful.”
Raila will face President Uhuru in a repeat election scheduled for October 17th, after the Supreme Court nullified the August 8th contest.
