In a significant move to bolster national security and modernize its recruitment processes, the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) of Kenya has announced the recruitment of 10,000 new police constables.

This initiative aims to address staffing shortages and enhance operational efficiency within the National Police Service.

The recruitment will be guided by the newly adopted National Police Service Commission (Recruitment and Appointment) Regulations, 2025.

These regulations are designed to streamline the recruitment process, promote transparency, and ensure a merit-based selection system, thereby strengthening public confidence in the service.

A notable feature of this recruitment drive is the introduction of an online application system. This digital shift is intended to reduce human contact in the recruitment process, thereby minimizing opportunities for corruption, favoritism, and manipulation that have marred previous exercises. Prof. Collette Suda, NPSC Commissioner, emphasized that leveraging technology will significantly reduce malpractices and give young Kenyans a fair chance to serve in the National Police Service.

Under the new system, candidates will first submit applications online. Only shortlisted candidates will proceed to the field for physical inspections. Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, highlighted that the overwhelming number of applicants in previous recruitments necessitated the adoption of technology to close gaps and enhance efficiency.

While the move towards digital recruitment has been lauded for its potential to curb graft, some members of the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security have expressed concerns. They argue that the online system may disadvantage applicants from regions with limited internet access.

The committee suggests that while the idea is welcome, it cannot be implemented immediately given the magnitude of the exercise and the digital divide across the country.

The NPSC has assured the public that the vacancies will be advertised in the coming days through established and credible communication channels. Successful applicants are expected to join training colleges later this year.

The commission urges all interested candidates to stay informed through official announcements and to be wary of fraudulent recruitment advertisements circulating on social media.

This recruitment drive marks a pivotal step in Kenya’s efforts to enhance its policing capabilities while embracing technological advancements to ensure fairness and integrity in public service appointments.
