Kenya’s Youngest Millionaire: Faith Cherotich Reaps Big After Historic Steeplechase Gold in Tokyo

Faith Cherotich became the latest multi-millionaire at the 2025 World Athletics Championships following her gold medal win in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Faith Cherotich is the latest to join the millionaires club following her gold medal win in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday.

Cherotich floored defending champion Winfred Yavi to claim her first world title, the 21-year-old bringing the curtains down on what has been an incredible season for her.

The Kenyan executed a great strategy, staying close to Yavi, before striking at the final barrier to win the race in a championship record 8:51.59 to become the youngster ever world champion over the distance.

Following her heroics, Cherotich is among gold medalists set to reap big in Tokyo as she is assured the $70,000 (Ksh9 million) prize money that is being awarded to gold medalists by World Athletics at the 2025 World Championships.

The 21-year-old can also look forward to an extra Ksh3 million from the Kenyan government which will be awarding that amount for gold, Ksh2 million for silver and Ksh1 million for bronze.

It takes her total to Ksh12 million from Tokyo, a great return for the young athlete, who has been in the form of her life this year.

Cherotich’s world title is an elevation from the bronze that she won in 2023 and at her age, she will be confident of retaining her crown in 2027 and also winning an Olympics gold in Los Angeles in 2028.

The women’s steeplechase gold was the fourth for Kenya in Tokyo, adding onto the 10,000m, won by Beatrice Chebet, marathon from Peres Jepchirchir and Faith Kipyegon’s 1,500m title.
