Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been impeached for the second time by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) after a heated session on Friday, August 15, 2025.

The motion, tabled by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony, passed with overwhelming backing as 33 MCAs voted to remove the governor from office.

Tensions flared in the Assembly moments after the Speaker confirmed Mutaiโ€™s impeachment, sparking chaos. The specific grounds for the ouster and details of the unrest are still emerging.

This is the second occasion on which Governor Mutai has been subjected to impeachment proceedings.

33 out of 47 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of removing Governor Erick Mutai from office, while 14 opposed the motion.

The electronically conducted vote comfortably exceeded the required two-thirds majority, a contrast to the governorโ€™s previous impeachment attempt when he survived in the Senate despite 31 MCAs voting against him.

The special sitting, marked by heated exchanges, descended into chaos moments after the Speaker announced the results.

The impeachment motion accuses Mutai of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.

Governor Mutai attended the session with his legal team, led by Katwa Kigen. His lawyerโ€™s request for the vote to be conducted through a roll call was rejected.

Following the vote, the Speaker confirmed that the case will now move to the Senate, where Mutai will have the chance to defend himself against the allegations.

If the Senate upholds the impeachment, he will be permanently removed from office; if not, he will retain his position.
