Esther and her husband, Mokaya, used to live in Daraja Mbili, Kisii county, and operated a clothes business that was doing very well.

On September 8, 2025, the calm of the Tuesday evening was shattered after a video went around showing a confused Moakaya, who seemed to be escaping the fire that had ravaged their house.

By the time the last ember had been put out, Esther was dead, and Mokaya had been rushed to the hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On September 11, an autopsy was carried out on the body of Esther, and it emerged that she had died of smoke inhalation.

Initially, reports had gone round the internet saying that there had been strangling, and Mokaya tried to burn the body later after a quarrel. Once the postmortem was done, the body was allegedly taken for preservation in Sirare. It is unclear if Esther’s family intends to bury her.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, the couple’s niece, identified as Faith Kemunto, alleged that the family of Esther had taken her body from KUTRH and they were not okay with that.
