A woman has been arrested after orchestrating a fraudulent abuse story to swindle Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi and the public of more than KSh 1 million.
The scandal began when a viral video surfaced online showing a woman allegedly being thrown out of her house with her two children. The distressing clip quickly spread across social media platforms (BBC News) and caught the attention of Kenyans, who urged Eric Omondi to intervene through his Sisi Kwa Sisi organization.
Moved by the outcry, Eric Omondi traced the woman and launched a fundraising campaign. Within hours, generous Kenyans raised over KSh 1 million to support the supposed victim and her children.
However, the truth soon unraveled. Investigations revealed that the story had been fabricated. The woman had borrowed one of the children from a friend and even hired a man to pose as her abusive husband in the video.
After confessing to staging the abuse story, the woman was arrested. Eric Omondi reported the matter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Authorities confirmed that the mobile phone used to collect the funds is now in police custody as investigations continue.
Chief Osoro, while addressing the shocking incident, called on Kenyans to remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes exploiting public sympathy.
Eric Omondi, who has often championed charitable causes through his initiatives, expressed disappointment over the deceit. He urged Kenyans to continue supporting genuine cases while exercising caution to avoid falling prey to similar scams.
