The construction of Ksh 1.4 billion Setet Hydro-Power along Chemosit River in Kericho County is set to resume after stalling for years.
The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) says the project is meant to generate power for tea factories in the region, which includes Momul, Litein, Tegat and Kapkatet.
KTDA is also planning to launch construction of another power project in three months along Kipsonoi River in Bomet County, which will benefit Kapkoros, Rorok, Tirgaga, Mogogosiek , Kapset and Boito tea factories, before embarking on another phase for Tebesonik, Chelal and Toror tea factories at Chemosit River.
Agriculture PS Paul Ronoh, who visited the construction site said the ministry is focused on reviving tea sector through cutting on production costs, which has been a serious challenge to tea farmers.
He said affordable power will enhance profitability and set to be completed and commissioned by June 2026.
The project will be carried out in four phases along Chemosit and Kipsonoi rivers.
There has been an outcry by tea farmers in the region after the project stalled despite having been deducted over Ksh 1 billion.
