Former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti has expressed firm confidence that Newton Kariuki Ndwiga, popularly known as Newton Karish, will carry the day in the forthcoming Mbeere North by-election.

Kivuti, who spoke while drumming up support for the Democratic Party candidate in Mbeere on Thursday, September 25, 2025, urged locals to embrace peace and unity in the campaigns while remaining unmoved by the influence of money being dished out by rival camps.

He said his policy was rooted in love and respect for one another, urging residents to eat whatever handouts are given but remain conscious of where to place their vote.

“We know there could be politics adamant but my policy is we love each other tupendane more. Even if you are given money, eat it, but know where you will cast your vote. That money is just our taxes being returned to us,” Lenny said.

The former legislator further noted that attempts to sway the people of Mbeere North with cash incentives would not work, insisting that locals were wise enough to differentiate between momentary gain and long-term leadership.

He maintained that the Democratic Party had settled on Karish because of his proven dedication, his service as a Member of County Assembly, and his strong connection with the people.

“Why were we not refunded earlier? So if that money comes, eat it, but when it comes to the ballot let us know where to vote. We are not fools,” Kivuti said as he urged voters to remain steadfast in supporting Karish.

Karish, who is currently serving his third term as Muminji Ward MCA, officially declared his candidature for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat last month.

He rose to political prominence in 2013 when he was first elected to the County Assembly, later defending his seat successfully in 2017.

Before politics, Karish had already captured the national spotlight as a Benga artiste, releasing timeless hits such as Muthoni Kifagio in 1993, alongside other popular tracks like Ngoma Bila Nguo, Avai Mwari, and Safari ya Meru.

His bold lyrics and cultural storytelling made him a household name across Embu, Meru, Kitui, and Machakos counties.

Karish’s dual influence in politics and music has shaped his reputation as a fearless advocate for his people, a quality mirrored in his outspoken songs and candid leadership style.

He has also used his platform to mentor upcoming artistes through his “Guitar ya Karish” initiative, which trains and supports young musicians across Embu County.

With his flamboyant stage presence, trademark cowboy hats, and sharp fashion, Karish has long been seen as a figure who seamlessly blends artistry with leadership. His popularity has now been channelled into the political arena, where the Democratic Party hopes his charisma and track record will deliver victory in the upcoming by-election.

The Mbeere North seat fell vacant following the resignation of former MP Geoffrey Ruku, who was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Resource Development.
