Nairobi: The Senate proceedings into the impeachment of Kericho governor Erick Mutai took a dramatic and lighthearted turn after Sigowet-Soin MCA Kiprotich Rogony, who tabled the motion, was grilled over allegations of drunkenness and irregular conduct.

However, his credibility came into question when senators played an audio recording in which a voice, alleged to be his, appeared to plead with another MCA for support to reach the threshold required for the impeachment.

The voice in the recording also allegedly promised KSh 200,000 and other perks in exchange for the vote.

During the grilling by Mutai’s lawyer, Katwa Kigen, Rogony denied being the person in the recording, insisting that the voice did not belong to him.

He further argued that even if it were him, the speaker in the clip sounded drunk, something he firmly distanced himself from.

He recounted his past roles as chairman of the Adventist group while in school and as a deacon at university, insisting that he could not be associated with drunkenness.

Rogony also dismissed claims that he voted twice during the impeachment, reiterating that he cast his vote only once.

The MCA added that he was unaware of ongoing investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), including allegations he cited, including the Kazi Mtaani project, which he had cited in his motion against the governor.

The exchange provided comic relief in the heated session, with senators, including Speaker Amason Kingi, bursting into laughter at Rogony’s emphatic defence.

Concluding the session on a lighter note, Kigen told Rogony, ‘You are my friend. Let’s continue being friends.
