Ngumoha was subbed on during stoppage time of Liverpool 3-2 win over Newcastle at St.James’ Park, and netted the dramatic stoppage time winner.

Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha announced himself on the Premier League stage in the most spectacular fashion, scoring a 100th-minute winner to secure Liverpool’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle United.

The Reds had looked in control after storming into a 2-0 lead, only for Newcastle to claw their way back into the match. With the clock deep into stoppage time, and the game seemingly destined for a draw, Ngumoha struck decisively.

 A sharp touch, a calm finish into the bottom corner past Nick Pope, and the teenager etched his name into Liverpool folklore.

The goal made Ngumoha Liverpool’s youngest-ever scorer, surpassing Ben Woodburn’s record, and placed him among the Premier League’s youngest matchwinners, alongside the likes of Wayne Rooney. 

In becoming the fourth-youngest scorer in league history, Ngumoha not only delivered three crucial points but also confirmed his immense promise.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk hailed the youngster’s instant impact:

“It was a dream debut for Rio. The composure he showed in that moment was incredible. This is just the beginning—he needs to keep working hard and stay humble.”

Head coach Arne Slot echoed the sentiment, applauding Ngumoha’s striking confidence:

“To finish like that, in that moment, shows unbelievable maturity. Not many 16-year-olds can do what he just did.”

Ngumoha’s confidence is nothing new. Speaking last October, the former Chelsea academy product boldly declared:

“I strongly believe that one day I will win the Ballon d’Or. I want to be considered one of the best players to have ever played football and become a legend of the sport.”

Far from empty words, the teenager’s match-winning debut suggests he has the mentality—and ability—to back them up.

Born in August 2008, Ngumoha joined Liverpool from Chelsea in September 2024 as Arne Slot’s first signing. 

He featured in youth and cup competitions before earning his league debut against Newcastle. Internationally, he has already represented England at U15, U16, and U17 levels.

For Liverpool, his breakthrough comes at a perfect time, highlighting the club’s ability to integrate academy stars into a title-chasing squad. For Ngumoha, it could be just the beginning of a glittering career.
