Manchester United secured a much-needed 2-0 win against Sunderland at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko, which eased the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim.ย

Mount scored his first home league goal with a beautiful finish, and Sesko quickly added a second, a vital boost for both players.ย

The victory was also marked by a great performance from new goalkeeper Senne Lammens, whose confident debut helped the team achieve their first clean sheet of the season.ย

This win gives United a positive boost before the international break, especially for Amorim, who needs to build momentum ahead of a challenging match against Liverpool.

After a respectful minuteโ€™s silence to remember the victims of the recent Heaton Park Synagogue attack, United immediately took control of the match.ย

The breakthrough came in the eighth minute, following a brilliant 18-pass team moveโ€”reportedly the longest sequence leading to a Premier League goal this season.ย

Bryan Mbeumo delivered a cross from the right, which Mason Mount expertly controlled with his left foot before slotting a low shot past Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs with his right.ย

This goal marked Mountโ€™s first league goal at Old Trafford and was a major confidence boost for the team.

Unitedโ€™s dominance continued, with forward Benjamin Sesko quickly doubling the lead in the 31st minute.ย

The Slovenian forward, who joined from RB Leipzig in the summer, reacted quickly inside the box after a long throw-in was flicked on, poking the ball home from close range.ย

It was Seskoโ€™s second goal in as many games and his first on the Old Trafford pitch, signaling a potential turning point in his season.ย

Sunderlandโ€™s only real hope of a reply before halftime was erased when a penalty decision against Sesko was overturned by VAR.

A key storyline of the day was the performance of goalkeeper Senne Lammens.ย

The 23-year-old Belgian, signed from Royal Antwerp, made his Manchester United debut and instantly impressed.ย

He handled crosses with confidence and made several strong saves, including a pivotal late block on Chemsdine Talbiโ€™s one-on-one chance.ย

His performance secured Unitedโ€™s first clean sheet of the season.ย

Manager Ruben Amorim praised his new keeper, noting, โ€œSenne did a great job in goalโ€ฆ He looked confident.โ€

The victory eases the intense scrutiny on Amorim, whose management has been criticized for poor resultsโ€”including 17 losses in his first 33 Premier League games, the worst record among all United managers since Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s departure.ย

However, the win was a testament to the playersโ€™ support, with Mount stating, โ€œThe players are 100 percent behind [Amorim].โ€ย

The three points secure Unitedโ€™s third consecutive home league win, a welcome sign of stability.

The result lifts Manchester United to eighth place in the Premier League table, closing the gap on the top half of the league as the season heads into the international break.ย

For promoted Sunderland, who are now in seventh place, the match was a difficult reminder of the challenge of maintaining form in the top flight, a fact acknowledged by their manager, Regis Le Bris, who admitted, โ€œThe first 30 minutes were not at the level expected.โ€

United will use the break to prepare for a major test upon their return: an away trip to rivals Liverpool at Anfield on October 19.

If Amorim can build on the positive performances of Mount, Sesko, and the commanding debut of Lammens, this victory could mark the beginning of a much-needed change in direction for the club.
