Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has defied an order to present himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Matiang’i was required to appear at the DCI headquarters at 9.30 am on Friday for questioning over the alleged police raid of his Karen home two weeks ago.

Senior Superintendent of Police Michael Sang said the agency is investigating allegations of publication of false information contrary to section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act 2018, among other offenses in regard to the alleged raid of his home on February 9th.

“I have reasons to believe that you, Dr. Fred Matiangi, the former Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Co-ordination, is connected to the offence or has information which can assist me in my investigations,” reads the summon from Sang, who is attached to the Special Crime Unit.

Sang warned Matiang’i that failure to present himself at the DCI headquarters amounts to committing an offense liable to prosecution.

On Friday, Matiang’i’s lawyer Danstan Omari said the DCI summons were unsigned hence the decision to defy the orders. He added that his client has valid court orders shielding him from arrest by the police.

Omari insisted that the DCI should follow due process, stating that a proper summon under the National Police Service Act must be signed and witnessed by police officers.

“He has nothing to hide but the investigations must be done within the law,” Omari noted.

Accusing the DCI of misleading the media and Kenyans by insinuating that Matiang’i defied the authorities, Omari maintained the ongoing woes against his client are politically instigated.

“Any narrative to show Dr. Matiangi as somebody who is not ready to comply with the police is politics and hot air from the DCI,” he said.
