Growing up in a village where education was a privilege rather than a right, Maureenโ€™s path seemed mapped out long before she could write her own story.

Resources were scarce, and expectations often leaned toward girls dropping out to help at home or marrying young.

By the time she reached high school, her dream of joining a university felt fragile.

Then came a turning point: a scholarship from One Girl Can, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to educating, training, and mentoring girls across Kenya.

The support not only lifted the financial weight off her shoulders but also reignited her belief in what was possible.

With her scholarship secured, Maureen pursued higher education with determination. University was more than just a degreeโ€”it was a transformative experience.

She gained exposure, built confidence, and developed a sense of leadership that she never thought she possessed.

True to that realisation, Maureen did something remarkable after graduating: she went back to her village.

Back to the same classrooms where she once sat, unsure of her future. But this time, she stood tallโ€”not as a student, but as a mentor.

Through One Girl Canโ€™s Cycle of Empowerment, beneficiaries are encouraged to mentor other girls, creating a self-sustaining chain of upliftment. For Maureen, that cycle became deeply personal.

Already, her influence is visible. Younger girls in her community are setting their sights on secondary school and even university.

Parents who once doubted the value of investing in girlsโ€™ education are beginning to support their daughtersโ€™ ambitions.

Maureen is one of over 1,500 scholarship recipients and part of a network of more than 11,000 girls mentored annually through One Girl Can programs.

Each success story adds to a collective movementโ€”one that is quietly reshaping entire communities.

For Maureen, success is not only about her next stepโ€”it is about who comes after her, and her greatest joy is knowing that another girl wonโ€™t have to feel the despair she once felt.

In her story lies a simple but profound truth: Educate one girl, and you change her life. Empower her to give back, and you change the world around her.
