Savings and credit societies in the agriculture value chain are set to secure grants of up to Ksh 1 million to improve production by strengthening their operations.
Through a Ksh 57.4 million funding by Migori County Government in collaboration with the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), the initiative targets 40 SACCOs involved in key agricultural value chains, including local chicken, dairy, tomatoes, beekeeping, and bananas.
According to Reuben Opiyo, the County Program Coordinator for NAVCDP, the program spans all 40 wards in Migori County.
The SACCO-based model is designed to promote a collaborative approach to food production, an approach that has not yet been widely adopted in Migori County or the larger Nyanza region.
NAVCDP is a national initiative implemented in 34 counties across Kenya, with the aim of supporting agricultural value chain development, increasing productivity, and improving farmer incomes.
Farmers in Migori have welcomed the program with optimism, noting that access to funding within their groups will help them scale up operations, increase yields, and improve livelihoods.
Speaking during the grant disbursement event in Kuria East, Migori County Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko reaffirmed his administrationโs commitment to strengthening agriculture at the grassroots level.
He emphasized that food production remains the backbone of economic growth and pledged continued support for farmers across the county.
