Police in Mlolongo are investigating a shocking incident where a 30-year-old woman allegedly killed her nine-year-old daughter by throwing her from the sixth floor of an apartment building.
The suspect, identified as Esther Mueni, also injured her younger daughter, aged four, in the same incident. Witnesses say the woman then attempted suicide by leaping off the same floor but survived with serious injuries.
According to witnesses and police reports, Mueni climbed to the sixth floor with her two daughters before pushing the nine-year-old off. The girl died instantly after hitting the ground.
The woman then pushed her four-year-old daughter, who survived but sustained critical injuries. Shortly after, Mueni jumped from the same spot but miraculously survived, though she was left with severe injuries.
Residents of the apartment block said they were left in shock after witnessing the horrifying scene. Police confirmed that the incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, August 21, 2025.
The deceased girlโs body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy, while the injured child and the suspect were rushed to hospital. Police stated that Mueni is under police watch at the hospital and will face possible charges of murder and attempted murder once she recovers.
โThe motive of the incident is still unclear,โ police said in a brief statement.
Authorities have launched investigations to establish what led to the tragic act. Mental health experts say that cases of filicide (parents killing their own children) often involve underlying psychological struggles.
The incident comes amid growing concerns about rising cases of domestic violence and mental health crises in Kenya, highlighting the urgent need for support systems for families in distress.
