Nakuru-based nightclub Space Next Door has issued a public statement following widespread criticism over a viral video showing its hosts and dancers dressed in skimpy primary school uniforms to promote a theme night.

The entertainment spot, located along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway, came under heavy fire on social media, with many accusing it of sexualizing school-going children.

In its statement, Space Next Door distanced itself from the allegations, clarifying that the intention behind the costumes had been misinterpreted.

“We recognize that the timing of its release was unfortunate given the current situation in the country. We therefore wish to emphasize that Space Next Door does not, in any way, encourage or promote the negative interpretations being made,” the statement read.

The management explained that their themed events often feature dancers in different occupational outfits such as nurses’ scrubs, mechanics’ gear, and chefs’ attire, designed to creatively connect with society.

“As part of our themed nights, Space Next Door incorporates creative concepts that connect with the society and celebrate different professions and careers. This includes themed outfits such as nurses’ scrubs, mechanics’ gear, chefs’ attire, among others,” the club noted.

The nightclub admitted that the video may have been poorly received and offered an apology to the public.

“We sincerely apologize for any negative misinterpretation that the video may have caused. We remain committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism, creativity and community connection in everything we do,” the statement concluded.
