The deal emerged from talks between Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and a delegation of top NBA executives headed by NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi.
Akamanzi hailed the decision, saying, โKenya has all the ingredients to become a basketballย powerhouse in Africa: talent,ย passion, and strong government support. This arena will be a game changer, creating opportunities for local players and positioning Kenya as a premier hub for global basketball events.โ
Currently, the Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena stands as Kenyaโs only top-tier indoor basketball venue, accommodating national league games, international friendlies, and major tournaments.
Other courts in Nairobi include those at the United States International University, Railways Club in Upper Hill, Strathmore University, and Buruburu.
In Mombasa, basketball fixtures are held at the Makande Gymnasium (indoor) and the KPA courts, which host Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) matches.
The addition of a modern, world-class arena would position Kenya alongside nations like Rwanda, which has become a continental basketball hub thanks to its Ksh13 billion BK Arena.
โThis arena will not only be a landmark for Kenya but also a beacon of opportunity for our athletes,โ said Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
โIt aligns squarely with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), where sports is a key pillar for youth empowerment, economic growth, and social cohesion. By partnering with the NBA, we are investing in talent, jobs, and Kenyaโs future as a continental sporting hub.โ
