Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has sustained his guns on former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, whom he ( Ngunjiri) still holds is unfit to lead Mt Kenya.

Ngunjiri has been exalting former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, whom he says could be the best fit to be president, juxtaposed with Gachagua.

Gachagua and Matiang’i belong to the United Opposition, and have both declared their interests in unseating President William Ruto in 2027.

However, despite their display of unity before their supporters, Gachagua and Matiang’i have been said to differ behind the scenes.

In his assessment of things, Ngunjiri observed that the former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, is uneasy with Matiang’i’s inroads to Mt Kenya.

According to the former lawmaker. Matiang’i’s move seems strategic and which seem to threatens to break the bulwark Gachagua has apparently built in Mt Kenya.

That Matiang’i gets a warm reception in his undertakings in the mountain is a headache for Gachagua, Ngunjiri observed.

Gachagua has often held that he is the best fit to wrestle Ruto out of office.

He declared his bid last month, rallying other opposition principals behind him.

Others in the faction who have declared their bids are Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, PLP’s Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa of DAP Kenya.

Even as the faction hold joint political rallies and restate their resolve for unity, the choice of the presidential candidate has been argued as the likely deal-breaker.

Gachagua has carried himself as the face of the faction, leveraging the attacks on the current president as his political capital.

Kalonzo, on the other hand, has been reserved even as he advances his offensive against the current regime.

Gachagua and Kalonzo are deemed the big cheeses of the opposition, even as the other principals stretch their significance for th recognition.

However, in comparison with Gachagua, Kalonzo is regarded as the most experienced.

Whilst Kalonzo features among the second liberation politicians who began their political careers decades ago, Gachagua has less than a decade in active and elective politics.

He however served in the late Daniel Moi’s regime as an administrator, and letter in the shadow of former president Uhuru Kenyatta as his personal assistant.

Professor Makau Mutua recently regarded Gachagua as subordinate of Kalonzo politically.

With his experience, the Wiper leader cannot accept to play second fiddle to Gachagua, what could lead to their split, accordimg to Mutua.

Mutua, who serves as Ruto’s advisor on constitutional and human rights matters, described the alliance as a temporary political stunt driven by a fleeting frenzy unlikely to last.

He claimed that Gachagua aims to leverage Kalonzo to retaliate against Ruto following his impeachment last October.

Mutua noted that in their current setup, the former deputy president intends to take control of Kalonzo and exploit his political influence for vengeance against the president.

But Kalonzo is fully aware of this strategy, Mutua suggested.

And as an experienced politician with decades of understanding of the Kenyan political terrain, the Wiper leader is unlikely to accept a subordinate role to Gachagua, who has only been prominent for less than ten years.

According to Mutua, their partnership will only succeed if Gachagua agrees to follow Kalonzo’s lead.

He also predicted that Kalonzo will soon break away from the “united opposition” coalition to pursue his own agenda without Gachagua.
