Nairobi Gubernatorial aspirant in the upcoming 2027 General election Irungu Nyakera has called on the Parliament to enact a legislation preventing gunmen from using motorcycles to harm and kill Kenyans.
Nyakeraโs proposal comes a day after the fatal shooting and killing of prominent city lawyer Matthew Kyalo Mbobu along Magadi Road in langโata, Nairobi on Tuesday evening.
โThe killing of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu is a painful reminder that no Kenyan is safe when gunmen can use boda bodas to strike,โ Nyakera stated.
The Democracy for Citizens Party Patron in Nairobi said that, such a law which will require all riders to wear reflective vests, and motorcycle numbers displayed will make it harder for criminal elements to useย motorcycles to move freely , and cause mayhem to innocent Kenyans.
โWe must act firmly with legislation to protect innocent Kenyans, just as other countries have done. In Uganda, riders wear reflective vests with their bike numbers boldly printed, making it harder to hide their identity. In India and the Philippines, boda bodas must have GPS trackers so police can tell which bikes were in a crime scene and trace them later. In parts of Latin America, riders take full personal responsibility if their bike is used in crime โ just like with guns,โ Nyakera asserted.
The former transport Permanent Secretary, also said by passing such a legislation-it will be a great way of honoring the fallen lawyer
โI urge Parliament to honor Kyalo Mbobuโs memory by rising above politics and passing such legislation without delay,โ Nyakera appealed.
Meanwhile, a postmortem on the body of the slain lawyer is expected to be conducted today at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
This comes as detectives turn to CCTV footage on Langโata Road to aid in apprehending the killers.
