The newly established Nyandarua University College has admitted its first group of students, marking a major milestone in the countyโ€™s education sector.

At least 320 students reported on Monday for the inaugural intake at the Ol-Joro Orok Agriculture Training Centre in Olโ€™jororok Sub-County.

The constituent college of the University of Nairobi is launching with flagship programmes including: Bachelor of Education (Arts), Bachelor of Education (Physical Education), Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management, and Bachelor of Commerce.

While the development has been welcomed by many, a section of youth leaders from the county, led by John Kirogo and Elizabeth Mwangi, alleged that some elected leaders were unhappy with the project citing lack of consultation.

The youth leaders accused certain politicians of attempting to sabotage the establishment of the institution due to vested interests.

Addressing the media, they emphasized that they would not allow politics to derail the project. They expressed optimism that the new college, to be based at Kaptein shopping centre in Ol-Kalou Constituency, will stimulate economic growth across Nyandarua.

They noted that the influx of students will create business opportunities and attract investment in rental housing and related services.

The institution is expected to provide not only quality higher education but also act as an economic driver for the region.
