Kenya’s celebrated rapper Nyamari Ongegu, popularly known as Nyashinski, has signed a landmark recording deal with global music powerhouse Sony Music, marking a defining moment in his career.

The announcement was made on Sony Music’s official Instagram page on Thursday, August 14, 2025, alongside the release of his new single Tai Chi, which sets the stage for upcoming projects under the Sony Music Africa banner.

“Big welcome to the Sony Music Africa family @realshinski 🇰🇪 🐐 ‘Tai Chi’ out at midnight EAT,” read the label’s post.

Sony Music Africa’s managing director, Sean Watson, described the deal as a milestone for the region.

“Nyashinski represents everything the world needs to see from East Africa—authenticity, versatility, longevity, and artistic excellence. This partnership is about more than music; it’s about elevating the culture and giving East African voices the global platform they deserve,” he said.

Beyond elevating Nyashinski’s career, the deal is seen as a major step in amplifying East Africa’s presence on the international music stage, positioning the region as a cultural force with Nyashinski at the helm.

The rapper shared his excitement on Instagram:

From his early 2000s days with the legendary rap trio Kleptomaniax to his award-winning solo career, the Silencer hitmaker’s journey has been one of resilience and reinvention. After years abroad following the group’s hiatus, he made a powerful comeback in 2016 with hits like Now You Know and Malaika, showcasing a mature and versatile sound.

Since then, Nyashinski has consistently dominated the charts, evolving from group fame to becoming one of Kenya’s most influential solo acts—a trajectory now poised to reach new global heights under Sony Music.
