Swedish police said on Friday that one man was killed and another injured in a suspected gang-related shooting in the city of Orebro, about 200 kilometers west of Stockholm.
The attack took place near the Orebro Mosque, but authorities emphasized that the incident was not connected to the place of worship. โI want to stress that currently, we donโt see any connection to the mosque. On the other hand, we do see a connection to criminal groups,โ a police spokesperson told reporters at a news conference.
The second victim was taken to hospital, though police declined to comment on the severity of his injuries. At least one suspect was seen fleeing the scene, but no arrests had been made as of Friday evening. The case is being investigated as murder and attempted murder.
โBased on the current situation regarding the shooting in Orebro, the incident is believed to be linked to the criminal network environment,โ police said in a statement, without providing further details.
Sweden has struggled with gang-related crime for more than a decade, with deadly shootings among the highest in Europe, even though the countryโs overall murder rate remains comparable to its neighbors.
The Orebro shooting comes months after the city was shaken by Swedenโs deadliest-ever gun attack in February, when a former student killed 10 people at a local school before taking his own life. That case was not tied to gang activity, and investigators have yet to determine a motive.
Fridayโs shooting has renewed concerns about the persistence of gang violence in Sweden, despite recent government crackdowns and efforts to curb organized crime.
