The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of Shedrack Omondi Okindo, also known as Hon. Mosquito, in connection with a viral TikTok video containing alleged incitement to violence and threats to public order.
Circulated on August 1, 2025, the controversial video sparked widespread concern among the public and prompted immediate action from law enforcement. Detectives tracked Mr Okindo to a hideout in Miritini, Mombasa County, where he was arrested.
A search of his residence uncovered the following items: – two pairs of tactical combat fatigues;
– a notebook containing references to “guerrilla resistance tactics” and “justice for all freedom fighters”;
– three mobile phones; and
– assorted documents linked to the Justice Direction Party.
Okindo is currently in police custody undergoing processing as he awaits his court appearance.
His arrest came after he defended ex-security agents Patrick Osoi, Hiram Kimathi and Jackson Kihara.
He was transferred to Nairobi, where he was booked at Gigiri Police Station before being taken to Kahawa Law Courts.
In court, the police, represented by State Prosecutors Harrison Kiarie, Kennedy Amwayi and Fatuma Mohamud, sought to have Okindo held for 14 days while they investigated his social media posts.
He is being investigated for preparing to commit a felony, wearing an unauthorised uniform, and offences relating to terrorism.
“At the time of the recording, the respondent was wearing a full tactical jungle green uniform, which probably indicates paramilitary activity,” said investigating officer Milton Ligare.
The police constable is seeking to have Okindo detained, as he may interfere with witnesses or tamper with evidence.
However, Kahawa Law Court magistrates Richard Koech and Gideon Kiage are not on duty.
Okindo appeared before visiting magistrate Meresia Opondo from Kiambu Law Court.
His lawyers applied to have Ligare cross-examined on his supporting affidavit.
Magistrate Opondo noted that her authority was limited, and directed that the application be made before the trial court tomorrow, when the hearing will take place.
The TikToker was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Miritini.
The DCI posted on X: “The inflammatory clip, which contained threats of violence and incitement against public order, quickly went viral, triggering public concern and swift action from security agencies.”
Kimathi’s arrest and court appearance came a day after police officer Hiram Kimathi was arraigned at the Kahawa Law Court.
Kimathi had spent the weekend in police custody after being arrested at his home in Kambakia, Meru County, on August 1.
In the application by the police, prosecutors Kiarie, Amwayi and Mohamud want Kimathi to be held for 14 days while the police probe his association with the Fighting Brutality and Impunity (FBI) movement.
According to the police, the FBI is an anti-government movement.
However, Kimathi’s case did not proceed as Magistrate Opondo was unable to preside over the matter.
