Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has appointed Prof. Kennedy Otieno Awuor to be a board member of the National Biosafety Authority for a period of three years.
The appointment is as per section 6(1)(f) of the Biosafety Act and is effective 15th August 2025. The section provides that the Board consist of two experts in the biological, environmental and social sciences respectively, appointed by the Cabinet Secretary.
Prof Awuor is an associate professor in the department of mathematics, school of pure and applied sciences.
He holds a PhD and a masters of sciences in applied mathematics from Kenyatta University, He is also a holder of a Bachelors degree in Education (science) from the same University.
He teaches mathematics to undergraduate and masters students. His area of specialization is applied mathematics. His research interest is in the numerical stimulation of fluid flow in an enclosure.
Last month the 3 -year term of two directors Dr. Daniel Njoroge and Mohamed Haji Hussein came to an end after serving for one term.
Meanwhile the Authority led by Board of Directors Chairperson Prof. Jenesio Kinyamario, independent Board member Mr. Asteri Angolo and management led the Authority in 2025/2026 PC negotiations with the State Department for Agriculture and Livestock Development.
The Ministry officials were led by Mr. James Wanjohi. Prof. Kinyamario underscored the importance of the exercise. He said the Authority had followed the 22nd cycle performance contracting guidelines issued by the Public Service Performance Management Unit (PSMU).
โMore importantly, the Authority has identified targets that are aligned with the achievement of its Strategic Plan (2023-2027) for inclusion in this performance contract,โ said the chairperson.
He said the Board will achieve its strategic objectives as clearly captured in the eight (8) Key Results Areas (KRAs) through the implementation of the performance contract.
โUpon the completion of this negotiation exercise and the subsequent vetting of the targets for FY 2025/26, the Board intends to cascade these targets to the management of the Authority all the way to the departmental level,โ said Prof. Kinyamario.
