The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service will officially be commissioned by President William Ruto on 17th September,2021.
The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir on Friday confirmed that the service line is now complete and ready for use.
The CS was on an inspection tour together with Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga said the service line will be a game changer in the transport sector within the Coast region.
He reaffirmed the governmentโs commitment to improving public transport, noting that upon commencement of operations, the service is projected to transport approximately 4,000 commuters daily.
โThe commuter service will facilitate seamless connectivity for passengers traveling to and from Nairobi via the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, as well as serve residents of Shimanzi, Mazeras, Changamwe, and other communities situated along the corridor,โ he said
He emphasized that the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service forms part of the wider transport infrastructure initiatives being spearheaded by the Ministry of Roads and Transport in the Coast Region, with the objective of enhancing mobility, reducing congestion, and promoting regional economic growth.
This is expected to bring to an end the long-standing inconvenience for passengers arriving in Mombasa via the Madaraka Express is finally being addressed
