The human body is a regeneration machine—wounds heal, fractures mend, and even organs like the liver can regrow from just one-third its original size. However, in the broad context of the animal kingdom, humans are relative novices in the regeneration department. While we as mammals are pretty adept at regenerating some tissues, certain fishes, amphibians, and reptiles can regrow entire limbs and major organs, including tissue in the brain, the central nervous system, the heart, and even the retina, the innermost, light-sensitive tissue of the eye.
