Nairobi drivers have been told to expect traffic snarl-ups on Friday, August 22, as the capital city hosts the CHAN 2024 quarter-final clash between Kenya and Madagascar.

The match, scheduled at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will result in temporary road closures and diversions along major routes.

In a notice, Nairobi Traffic Commandant Joseph Chirchir outlined several traffic management plans designed to ease the movement of teams, fans, and emergency services.

With Kasarani Stadium as the venue, Thika Road will be the most affected, with the traffic department announcing multiple closures and diversions in the area.

Drivers heading from the city centre towards Ruiru, Juja, or Thika via Thika Road should exit at Muthaiga and use Kiambu Road (Exit 4), where a roadblock will redirect vehicles.

Motorists using the Thika Superhighway towards Mwiki will need to follow the Ruakaโ€“Baba Ndogoโ€“Lucky Summerโ€“Nairobi Riverโ€“Mwiki route.

Vehicles from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru going into the CBD must use the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, as the Ruiru interchange will be blocked.

Commuters from Githurai heading to the city are advised to pass through Githurai 44 and connect via Kiambu Road.

Fans without official vehicle access passes travelling to Moi International Sports Centre will only be allowed to use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

The National Police Service has confirmed that extra officers will be stationed in the affected areas to help manage traffic, warning that strict action will be taken against rule breakers.

This marks the first time since CHAN 2024 kicked off that traffic changes have been announced without impacting the roads around Nyayo Stadium.

The shift comes after Nyayo Stadium hosted its final CHAN match on Monday, August 18, between Algeria and Niger, and will no longer be used for the tournament.

After the quarter-final, the only remaining CHAN fixture in Kenya will be the final on August 30, regardless of whether Harambee Stars make it through.
