Nairobi, Kenya – September 12, 2025 – A senior government official has been arrested as investigations intensify into the murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down earlier this week in Nairobi.
Authorities confirmed Thursday that the official is among six people currently in custody as detectives probe the killing, which police preliminarily link to an unresolved financial matter.
During coordinated operations in Nairobi, investigators recovered a substantial amount of money from the homes of those detained. Detectives brought in money-counting machines to verify the amounts, underscoring the scale of the suspected financial dealings.
Some of those held have described themselves as friends of Mbobu, while others are believed to have been clients of the slain lawyer. Several clients have already recorded formal statements with investigators.
Police said some of the detainees met Mbobu at a Nairobi restaurant on Tuesday afternoon, just hours before his death. Detectives are still pursuing additional individuals deemed relevant to the case, particularly regarding the nature of that meeting along Jakaya Kikwete Road.
The prominent lawyer was ambushed Tuesday night while driving along Magadi Road. Witnesses said a gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle intercepted his vehicle and fired multiple close-range shots, striking him in the neck and chest.
The attackers fled the scene, reportedly discharging additional rounds into the air as they escaped. Police say the firearm used has not yet been recovered.
Authorities stress that the role of the arrested senior official remains unclear as inquiries continue. Detectives are working to establish the financial ties at the heart of the probe and to identify all perpetrators involved.
