Motorists using Magadi Road into Nairobi on Monday morning were caught in a major traffic snarl-up after a passenger bus crashed into a ditch near the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) bus stop.

The bus, belonging to the Kanash fleet that plies the Rongai route, is said to have veered off the road while overlapping, before overturning and plunging into the ditch.

According to witnesses, the crash occurred on a slope along the road, an area notorious for frequent accidents. Emergency crews arrived promptly and later towed the bus away, though the recovery exercise caused prolonged traffic delays.

โ€œItโ€™s one of the three Kanash buses. The newest one got into an accident this morning and overturned along Magadi Road. I hope there are no casualties,โ€ a concerned witness shared on social media.

A video clip seen by Viral Tea captured the last moments before the accident. In the clip, the bus was captured driving on the wrong side of the road while attempting to climb a slope when it rolled onto its right hand side.

A motorcycle rider who captured the proceedings stopped at the scene of the accident amidst screams from an unseen woman in the background, who would later emerge from the crash. Moments later, onlookers arrived to mobilise rescue efforts as the biker was seen trying to help another woman who was distraught from the incident.

At the time of publishing, no casualties or injuries had been officially confirmed, although witnesses indicated the bus was full when the crash happened.

The bus company has not yet released a statement on the cause of the accident or clarified whether any passengers were hurt.

In a similar incident last May, eight people died after a 32-seater busย plunged into the Mbagathi River in the Gataka area. The crash happened along the road linking Karen to Ongata Rongai, near the Cooperative University of Kenya.

The bus, operated by Naboka Sacco and heading to Nairobi from Gataka, lost control before veering off the road. The driver, who also perished, was among the victims.

Authorities confirmed that six passengers died instantly, while two others succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in hospital.

Witnesses recounted that the driver had slowed at the speed bumps but lost control as he attempted to accelerate, causing the bus to plunge into the river.
