'We Were Confused' - Ruben Amorim on Brentford Tricks That Denied Manchester United Victory

Ruben Amorim on Brentford Tricks That Denied Manchester United Victory

Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brentford after Ruben Amorim admitted his team was confused by Brentford’s clever tactics.

Manchester United slumped to another Premier League defeat, falling 3-1 to Brentford in front of 17,193 spectators at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Ruben Amorim’s side has now endured its third loss of the campaign, meaning half of their league matches so far have ended in defeat. The 20-time champions have now gone almost a year without securing two consecutive league victories under Amorim’s leadership.

The match got off to a disastrous start for the Red Devils, as Brentford struck early in the 8th minute through Igor Thiago, who pounced on a Harry Maguire offside lapse. Thiago doubled his tally just 12 minutes later, capitalising on a misjudged save from goalkeeper Bayindir.

Six minutes later, Manchester United pulled one back through Benjamin Sesko, netting his first goal for the club. After the break, United pushed for an equaliser and came close in the 73rd minute, when Bryan Mbeumo, a former Brentford player, won a penalty in a contentious incident that also sparked calls for a red card.

His effort from the spot was denied by ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Just as the game seemed destined to finish 2-1, Brentford struck on the counter in stoppage time. In the 95th minute, Mathias Jensen fired in a stunning effort from the edge of the box to seal a 3-1 victory for the Bees.

Manchester United vs Brentford: Ruben Amorim Reveals What Went Wrong

Following the defeat, Ruben Amorim stated that his players were misled and played in a manner that suited Brentford, rather than sticking to their own game. The Red Devils delivered another uninspired performance under the Portuguese coach, losing 3-1 in London.

“The feeling is always the same. We wanted to win, but we didn’t control the match. We played Brentford’s game. We were confused, first balls, second balls, set pieces. In key moments, everything went against us. It’s tough to lose again, but we have to look to the next match,” Ruben Amorim said after the match.

“At times, I saw the fighting spirit from the Chelsea game, but we can do better. That’s the main thing. The first ball, after winning possession, that’s what we worked on all week. Set pieces too. We knew they would look for high balls and have one-touch situations.

“Today, we didn’t play our game; only at certain moments did we manage to take control and push them back into their penalty area. That’s what we should have been doing, instead of getting drawn into the opponent’s style. Conceding another loss hurts a lot. Everything is important, not just home matches.”

Manchester United has one more home fixture against Sunderland next Saturday before the October international break. Immediately after the break, they face an away trip to Liverpool.
