The Diamond League is set to conclude with the season-finale in Zurich on Wednesday and Thursday but why are certain athletes set to pocket more than the others?

Attention shifts to the Swiss city of Zurich where the Diamond League Final will be staged on Wednesday and Thursday with the world’s top athletes set to contest for the shiny Diamond League Trophy as well as a bumper prize money.

The Diamond League Final is set to earn more for its winners compared to what they have been receiving in series meetings, increasing the level of competition.

Ahead of the epic battles, there is an average of $30,000 that will go to winners of the Diamond League Trophy but from this season, there are some changes that will see a number of athletes earn more than the others.

This is because the Diamond League introduced the “Diamond+ Disciplines” prize money structure where a select few events earn more than the average prizes on offer.

Why Other Events Will Earn More in Zurich

This has been happening throughout the series meetings and is set to continue at the finals in Zurich this week where eight of the 32 events will be under the “Diamond+ Disciplines.”

These disciplines will offer higher levels of prize money, with the maximum for individual athletes rising from $30,000 to $50,000.

At the Diamond League Final in Zurich, the “Diamond+ Disciplines” events will be the 100m men, 1,500m men, 400m hurdles men, pole vault men, 100m women, 100m hurdles women, 3,000m women, long jump women.

This means Olympics 100m champion Noah Lyles, silver medalist Kishane Thompson, Akani Simbine, Emmanuel Eseme, Trayvon Bromell and Zharnel Hughes will be contesting for $50,000 in Zurich as the rest fight for $30,000 while Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala will miss out after pulling out due to an injury.

Who Else is in Line for the $50,000 Prize Money?

The same will apply to the women’s 100m cast that has Olympics champion Julien Alfred, on-form Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, Maia McCoy, Africa’s fastest woman Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith, Jacious Sears, Dina Asher-Smith and Tina Clayton.

Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot, Reynold Cheruiyot and Phanuel Koech are among the 1,500m men’s lineup that will also be contesting for $50,000, same for the star-studded 400m hurdle event that has the big three of Rai Benjamin, Alisson dos Santos and Karsten Warholm who form part of the seven-man cast.

Meanwhile, Olympics champion Masai Russell, Jamaican Ackera Nugent and Nigerian Tobi Amusan are among the seven finalists who will also fight for $50,000 at the Diamond League Final in the women’s 100m hurdles while Olympics champion Tara Davis-Woodhall will be the star attraction in the women’s long jump that also has $50,000 on offer.
