In his usual charismatic posture, President William Ruto picked up a microphone on a fairly calm Saturday afternoon and fired shots at his critics from the hills and drylands of Vihiga County.

Without mincing his words, Ruto described his critics and likely opponents in the 2027 General Election as clueless, visionless, planless and brainless leaders with no agenda for the country.
In a no-holds-barred speech delivered on Saturday, October 4, in Majengo, the head of state said Kenyans had no time for leaders who neither have ideas nor brains to take the country forward.

Although the president did not mention names, it was apparent that the roadside jibes were directed at his former ally-turned-political nemesis, Rigathi Gachagua.

Rigathi Gachagua differs with Matiang’i over boardroom politics: “Can’t make you president”
Ruto has previously described Gachagua as a tribalist and uneducated politician who made his first two terms in office disastrous.
While addressing over 10,000 teachers at Nairobi State House on Friday, September 13, the president took a swipe at his former deputy, insinuating he was academically handicapped.
He told teachers that Gachagua used to lament about his level of education, a habit he said contributed to his decision to replace him with law professor, Kithure Kindiki.
I had another deputy who used to lament about his level of education, and I was sceptical that he would fail me if I continued keeping him around,” said Ruto as teachers burst into laughter.
He used the occasion to heap praise on Kindiki, saying he was not only more learned than him but was also a sharp, astute and effective administrator who had made his work easier than before.
It was not the first time the president was castigating his former deputy in public. In January 2025, Ruto lambasted Gachagua, describing him as a corrupt and incompetent deputy.

Coincidentally, just like today, Ruto uttered these words while in Vihiga county, the home turf of Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, a man pundits have described as the president’s favourite successor.
In a quick rejoinder, Gachagua described Ruto as the “father of corruption and tribalism”, arguing he was merely employing reverse psychology to escape accountability questions Kenyans were posing to him.
